Makefile: Don't use printf '\c'; not needed, and not portable

Remove the printf '\c' introduced in
3306a802a11b8d945af081cb835bb7fe208dc84c.

Thanks to Alexander Barton for reporting the problem (seen on macOS)
and proposing an alternate solution.
